CAIRN TERRIER ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW 20th October 2011.

I must thank the Officers and Committee for the invitation to judge the show and for the hospitality given to me. I thoroughly enjoyed my day and thank the exhibitors for a very pleasing entry.  I must thank my two stewards, who were very efficient and kept me and the ring organised and running smoothly at all times.

Well first, let’s get the bad news out of the way. As has been stated previously by other judges the depth of quality in the males is extremely disappointing in comparison the females.  Faults found throughout the entry, but more commonly in the males, were narrow skulls, long snipey muzzles, round prominent eyes, eyes too close set. Small, and sometimes jumbled teeth, including a few bites that were verging on level or were level. There are still quite a number of short upright forearms, and also a number of animals that were just far too long in loin. Movement is another worry, very few move true both ways and with freedom of movement. Many moved too wide in front and or close behind. Something else I feel I must mention is the way a few exhibits were presented; to put it bluntly they stank! I am not on about dogs that had a slight odour to them because they have been caught out in the rain, in a coated breed and in this country I believe you have to expect this to a degree. I am talking about exhibits you can smell from a few paces away, and you can feel the dirt and grime in the coats as you’re going through them. I’m sorry this is not the way dogs should be presented for the show ring and I do feel if you cannot provide clean, dry living conditions and bedding for your dogs, then you should be questioning  why you have these dogs at all!

Please don’t think it is all doom and gloom, I did find some lovely examples of our breed throughout the entry. We definitely have a few rising stars among the puppy and junior classes, in both sexes and  the Open dog, Limit bitch and Open bitch classes were a joy to judge and with only 5 placings available some lovely animals had to go unplaced.

MPD.(2). 1. Felters & Rumens, Landbuck Para Handy. Well grown dark grey brindle. Shown in a full puppy coat of good texture. Head still needs to develop a bit. Dark eye and good bite.  Good layback of shoulder and straight front, level top line and well set tail. Moved and showed steadily. 2. Catto’s, Birselaw Bobby Darin. Light red brindle, looking immature to class winner. Excels in head, with deep stop and good bite. Nicely balanced throughout, not quite as positive in front as 1st on the move.

PD. (3, 2 abs).1. Percys, Winetta Stand and Deliver. Well grown red brindle. Needs to mature in head and eye could be a shade darker. Ok in shoulder but a shade upright in fore arm, well sprung rib and nicely made behind.  Showed well, but needs to settle in movement.

JD.(6). 1. Robinsons, Cruzo Bilbo Baggins. Up to size wheaten, shown in excellent coat and condition. Excels in head, with deep stop and super expression. Good neck into well made front and level top line, well sprung rib and nicely angulated behind. Took a while to settle, but when he did moved freely and soundly and shows with confidence. Pleased to award him the RCC, sure he’ll be winning the big green cards soon. 2. Fyfes, Andrum Hawkeye. Again up to size, clear red, all male. Has a super head and expression, with good bite and large teeth. Super front and fore chest. Not looking as balanced as class winner, just needs to drop in chest and grow into himself. Tail a shade long and spoils his overall balance and not the presentation of class winner. Very free moving. 3. Newtons, Strathinver Specification.

MD. (0)

ND.(2). 1. Byrne & Inetts, Wheaten brindle with some maturing still to do, ok in head, nice dark eye and good bite. Good shoulder and front , level top line but a bit long in loin. Well presented and shows with confidence, needs to settle in movement. 2. Kinchins, Tyreece’s Tricks at Pennidazzle. Mature dark red brindle, ok in head, nice dark eye of correct shape and correct bite. Carrying too much weight and is a bit heavy in shoulder. Again is a shade too long on loin, which spoilt his overall balance, moved and showed steadily.

UGD. (1).1. Lattimers, Birselaw Sir Bobby. Mature wheaten brindle that excels in head, with a deep stop, correct eye shape and colour and a good bite. Good front, firm top line and well set tail, just a shade short in loin. Presented in a full coat of correct texture, but carrying too much weight, which shortens him even more. Moves and shows steadily.

GD. (3,1abs).1. Newtons, Strathinver Specification. Red that still has some maturing to do yet, stood 3rd in junior class. Nicely made head, with dark eye and correct bite. Good neck into well made front, nicely ribbed. Would benefit from a little extra weight on him. Coat of good texture just coming in, shows well when standing, but needs to settle on the move. 2. Lamb & Saltmarsh’s, Birselaw Fable. Mature dark grey brindle, very good in head and expression. Good neck and shoulder, shade upright in fore arm. Shown in good coat and condition, confident showman but can be a bit too proud of his tail at times.

PGD.(2).1. Camerons, Stryveling Rocket Man. Red brindle, not a big dog and for a male I would probably like a bit more of him all over. That said, he does have a beautiful head with good stop and dark eye. Well put together throughout and presented a balanced outline. Shown in a good coat, but could have done with a bit off his britches, as they looked rather full. Shows well when standing, but doesn’t make the best of his self on the move. 2. Inetts, Hydecastle Reg The Rocket. Wheaten that still has some maturing to do. Has a nice expression, but was not as good in head as 1st. Good front and fore chest. Well ribbed but a shade long in loin. At one with his handler and showed very well, but was moving wide in front.

LD.(8,3abs).1. Hogartys, Cadagio More Than A Feeling. Eye catching wheaten, all male and very well balanced. Beautiful head, with a deep stop and dark eye. Good length of neck into well made front, with a good fore chest. Well ribbed and firm top line, well set tail but can be a bit proud of it at times. Shown in excellent coat and condition, moved true both ways and with drive from behind.  2. Braybrooks, Cloverbrook Codebreaker. Grey brindle, another eye catching male with a beautiful head, deep stop and dark eye. Not quite the intensity of expression as 1st though. Very good angulations at both ends, which showed in his freedom of movement. Shown in excellent coat and condition. 3. Percys, Winetta Sir Percy.

OD(10).This was a lovely class to judge, probably the best dog class I have ever judged for depth of quality and with only 5 placings there were dogs I liked that had to go cardless. 1. Shoplands, Cherrycrack Blackadder. Dark grey brindle, who has just matured nicely. All male with no hint of coarseness. Well made head, with dark eye and intense expression, deep stop and wide jaw with big teeth making a perfect scissor bite. So well put together, everything just fits where it should. Best front of the males, good fore chest, deep well sprung rib and firm top line. Shown in excellent coat and condition and moves true in both directions. On his toes and well deserved the CC, his 3rd, congratulations a well deserved champion. 2. Felters & Rumens, Ch Landbuck Tillisch. Light red, smaller made dog that 1st, has a lovely head and expression with deep stop. Good neck into well made front, firm top line and nicely angulated behind. Presented a balanced outline standing and on the move. Very well presented, not easy on a red! Moved well in both directions, but have seen him show better than he did today, just seemed uninterested in the proceedings. 3. Templetons, Ch Larchlea Time To Entertain.

SBD.(1).1. Warnes, Spirebrooke Dawn Raider. Good sized grey brindle, unplaced in Open Dog class. Nicely made head, with correct eye and bite. Nicely made in front, well sprung rib and shown in good coat and condition. He just looked a shade long in profile, which spoilt his overall balance.

VD/B.(4,1abs).1. Dolans, Ch Glenrood Magic Solitaire. Very feminine dark grey brindle who was still on her toes and showing her heart out for her handler. Well made throughout, with good angulations front and back, firm top line and well set tail. Shown in first class coat and condition. Moved around the ring with drive, Best Veteran. 2. Hootons, Penticharm Burning Desire. Another quality bitch, at 10 ½ the oldest entrant in the class, but again was on her toes and showing her heart out for her handler. She has a nicely made head with sweet expression, good front, firm top line and well set tail. Moved around the ring with drive, just not in as good a coat as the class winner. 3. Erenbergs, Ch Carradine Master Tigger.

MPB.(5). 1. Shaws, Honeyhall Hearsay. Ultra Feminine wheaten brindle bitch. Sweetest of expressions and a very well made head, deep stop, wide jaw and good bite. Very well made in front, with a good fore chest and well sprung rib. Well angulated both ends which showed in her freedom of movement that was true both ways. Shown in good coat and condition and never stopped showing. Very promising puppy and pleased to award her Best Puppy in Show. 2. Cattos, Birselaw Groovy Kind Of Love. Another smart wheaten brindle, very similar to class winner, just a shade bigger throughout. Excels in head, with intense expression and deep stop and good bite. Good neck into well made front, with firm top line and good quarters. She was a shade proud of her tail at times, that should settle with age. Shown in good coat and condition and moved true both ways. 3. Hogartys, Cadagio Turning Tables.

PB.(5,3abs).1. Shannon & Storrs, Brenndarcy Snedronningen. Feminine wheaten brindle of nice size. Well made head with wide jaw and good bite. Good length of neck into clean shoulders, well ribbed and nicely angulated behind. Moved nicely in profile but a shade close behind going away, top line needs to firm up a bit on the move. 2. Wards, Vanajam It’s Cold Outside. Immature wheaten brindle, very feminine in outlook. Nicely made head, with sweet expression. Nice neck into well made shoulder and firm top line. Just needs to mature and fill out a bit, but lots to like about her. Bit short of coat but what she has is of good texture.

JB.(9,2abs).1. Yates & Johnsons, Pendley Playaway. Very smart and feminine wheaten brindle. Very well made head with intense expression, wide jaw and correct bite. Presented a lovely balanced profile and excels in front with well laid shoulder, correct fore arm, good fore chest and well sprung rib. Firm top line and perfectly set tail. Shown in excellent coat and condition, showed her socks off and moved true both ways and with drive from the rear. Seriously considered her for top honours, just felt she is not quite ready yet, sure her day will come soon. 2. Waugh & Carlton-Smiths, Tribannon Guardian Angel. Very feminine red brindle. Super head with dark eye, deep stop, intense expression and good bite. Excels in front with good fore chest, firm top line and good ribbing, good texture to coat. Moved well when she put her mind to it, just needs to connect with her handler to get the best out of her and not the presentation of 1st either. 3. Jones’, Strathinver Simply Florrie.

MB.(2,1abs).1. Jones’, Strathinver Simply Florrie. Nicely balanced wheaten, 3rd in junior class. Well made head with good expression and bite. Well made in front, firm top line and good rib. Shown in good coat and condition. When she settles she moves well, just needs to settle down a bit.

NB.(3,2abs).1. Samets, Cloverbrook Black Diamond. Up to size dark grey brindle. Nicely made head, good neck and ok in front. Holds her top line on the move, moved  and showed steadily. Shown in good coat, just carrying a shade too much weight.

UGB.(3).1 Days, Trekilli Beanie Baby. Nicely balanced dark red brindle. So feminine in outlook, well made head with good stop and correct bite. Correctly angulated both ends, which allowed her to move truly and freely. Shown in first class coat and condition, won this class with a bit to spare. 2. Osborns, Tweslam Serendipity. Smaller type grey brindle. Nicely made throughout and presents a balanced out line. Shown in good coat and condition. Not moving with the freedom of class winner. 3. Ushers, Stryveling Polly Flinders.

GB.(7,2abs).1. Days, Trekilli Piccalilli JW. Very smart dark grey brindle. Well made head with keen expression and good bite. Good neck and shoulders, firm top line and well set tail. Shown in first class coat and condition. Moved true both ways. 2. Inett & Harrisons, Carradine Time To Shine JW. Another smart grey brindle. Similar comments apply as to class winner, she is nicely made throughout, at one with her handler on the move and standing. Just moving a shade wide on the return. 3. Kintons, Woodthorpe Maybe This Thyme.

PGB.(9,4abs).1. Hewitts, Littleacorn Stay In Touch. Very smart light red brindle. Not overdone in any way. Nicely made head with correct bite and feminine in outlook. Well made throughout, with good angulations both ends, which showed in her true movement. Nicely presented in excellent condition and good new coat coming in. 2. Hooton & Hughes’, Penticharm Over The Rainbow. Feminine cream. Shade bigger throughout than class winner. Nicely made head, eye could be a shade darker. Very nice bitch to go over, good in front, firm top line and well ribbed. Shown in excellent coat and condition. Moved truly both ways and never stopped showing. 3. Waughs, Tribannon In The Limelite.

LB.(12). A lovely class to judge with real depth of quality throughout. 1. Dolans, Glenrood Masqerade. Ultra feminine wheaten brindle. Super head, with dark eye, keen expression and correct bite. Presents a truly balanced outline. Well made straight front, firm top line and good quarters. In excellent coat and condition, moved truly both ways and showed nonstop. Pushed so hard for the CC, it was a close decision but had to settle for the RCC and RBIS today. 2. Shaws, Honeyhall High ‘N’ Dry. Smart wheaten brindle. So similar to 1st in many respects, has a wonderful head, with good stop, keen expression and correct bite. Beautifully angulated both ends, with firm top line, correctly set tail and well sprung ribs. Moved with drive and purpose, never stopped showing. Really pushed the class winner for the 1st place. 3. Yates & Johnsons, Birselaw Only Make Believe to Pendley.

OB.(11,3abs). Another class of quality bitches, making for some tough decisions.

1. Cattos, Ch Birselaw Any Dream Will Do. Eye-catching wheaten brindle. Very feminine throughout, excels in head, deep stop and correct bite. Good length of neck into well placed shoulder, firm top line and good rib. Shown in a good, full and harsh coat. Moved freely and truly, never stopped showing. In the challenge was pushed hard by the Limit winner. But for me this girl had the slightly more intense expression and I just couldn’t deny her the CC & BOB. 2. Hardings, Ch Cannwood Remember Holly JW. Very smart wheaten brindle. Very feminine, smaller made throughout than class winner. But so well put together, well made head, with lovely dark points, good stop and correct bite. Good neck and shoulder, pronounced fore chest and well sprung rib. Firm top line held on the move, shown in superb coat and condition. At one with her handler, moved freely and with drive and never stopped showing, lovely bitch. 3. Hooton & Hughes’, Gyncairn Royal Velvet at Penticharm.

SBB.(7,2abs).1. Days, Trekilli Beanie Baby, winner of UGB class. 2. Byrnes, Little Miss Tonka. Mature wheaten. Nicely made head, with good bite. Well made throughout, well laid shoulder and well sprung rib. Shown in good coat and firm condition. Moved steadily, but a shade close behind. 3. Ushers, Stryveling Polly Flinders.
